Today I was doing some research for the Walking Places web site – looking at alternative routes to the Coast to Coast path – actually investigating how navigable Wainwright’s original route across Great Asby Scar would be, now that it’s all open access. I then used the published route to return to the car.
Loads of car park space here, just below Orton Scar
The C2C route cuts across the moor in the left of shot – Crosby Ravensworth Fell and meets the road the lorry is on
Heading for the Victoria Jubilee monument on Orton Scar, a fine landmark
Limestone outcrops on Orton Scar
The Jubilee monument on Orton Scar
This rickety old stil and gate takes you across the moor to Castle Folds
Much new signing is in evidence, now that the fell is open access – bodes well for C2C walkers who wants to stray somewhat.
Castle Folds settlement – not much to look at, but the limestone pavement here about is some of the most extensive I have seen anywhere
Huge expanses of limestone pavement stretch off in all directions
Rejoining the C2C path – the alternative route is quite do-able in my opinion
The buildings at Mazon Wath, one of the two ways of getting round Sunbiggin Tarn
Ravenstonedale Moor is the other way of coming round Sunbiggin Tarn
The road by Sunbiggin Tarn, familiar to most C2C walkers
Summer flowers in the meadows beside the more usual C2C path – Howgills in the distance
The C2C path most people tread, across the fields between Scarside and Sunbiggin Farms

I got somewhat lost on Great Asby Scar last May during a walk from Huddersfield to Keswick. http://www.huddersfield-keswick.blogspot.com Following the C to C using AW’s guide and an old Landranger OS 91 map. I was doing the trip on a shoestring so had not invested in the newer C to C maps and guides.
I’m planning on repeating this trip in a couple of weeks so thought I’d take a look on the interweb. It seems AW’s original traverse of the scar has been re-routed.
I really like your web site. Thank you.
Regards, fellow lone walker (plus dog)
Matthew, that sounds like a great walk – I’m going to read your journal later with a drink (when the wife puts something cr@p on the TV).
I’ve plotted a better route for C2Cers along the original AW path – this one doesn’t involve a wall climb like the walk described above.
Have a look here:
